Every winning video ad is a rerun of a formula that already works. The hook structure, the body rhythm, the CTA - it's not creative genius. It's pattern recognition applied to your product. Here are 8 of those patterns.
Before we get to the templates, understand this: the script is only half the ad. The other half is production - pacing, cuts, music, text overlays. That's what separates a script that converts from a script that just sits in a Google Doc. A great script in the hands of an editor who doesn't understand direct response is a dead creative. Keep that in mind as you build.
Your competitors who run clean, converting video ads? They're working from a system. They have a script structure they reload every week, a brief format that communicates to their editor without five Zoom calls, and a testing cadence that's generating data while you're still writing from scratch. Now you have the system.
The Framework: PAS - Problem, Agitate, Solution
Every template below is built on PAS - the most battle-tested direct response framework ever written. Before you touch a template, internalize the architecture. Each second of a 60-second ad is doing a specific psychological job. Miss it and you lose the viewer.
| Phase | Timing | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Problem | 0–5s | Name the pain, fear, or desire. Be specific. Use the exact words your customer uses in reviews and Reddit threads. "Back pain" loses. "That shooting pain down your left leg when you stand up after sitting for an hour" wins. |
| Agitate | 5–30s | Make the pain bigger - add stakes. Add the cost of inaction. Specificity multiplies emotional weight. What have they already tried? Why didn't it work? What is this costing them per day, per week, per year? Don't rush past this section. |
| Solution | 30–50s | Introduce the mechanism - not features. Your product is not the hero. The transformation is the hero. Don't list features. Describe what life looks like after the problem is solved. The product is just the vehicle. |
| Proof | 50–55s | One line of social proof. A number, a testimonial, or a transformation stat. Specific beats vague every single time. "50,000 customers" is weaker than "50,000 customers, 4.8 stars across 12,000 reviews." |
| CTA | 55–60s | One action. Specific. Low-friction. Don't say "click here." Say what happens next. "Click below, enter your address, we ship today." Reduce the gap between now and the outcome. Every word of friction costs conversions. |
With the architecture in your head, here are the 8 templates. Each one is written out in full - fill in the brackets, hand the script to a camera, ship it. The note after each template explains why the structure works, not just what it says.
Template 1 - The Pain Activation Script
Best for: E-commerce products solving a specific frustration
this is going to change everything."
and it works, until it doesn't.
The real problem is [root cause].
And it costs you [specific consequence]
every single [time period]."
Instead of [old way], [Product]
[mechanism of action].
In just [timeframe], you get [specific result]."
The average [result metric] is [specific improvement]."
Loss aversion + specificity. The more specific the pain, the more the viewer self-identifies. The hook isn't selling - it's selecting. You want the right viewer to think "they're talking about me." The agitate section works because it explains why the solutions they've already tried have failed. This isn't a new product pitch - it's validation that they weren't stupid for failing, they just had the wrong mechanism.
Template 2 - The UGC Testimonial Script
Best for: Products with strong social proof and repeat purchase
but [Name] literally changed my mind."
for [timeframe].
I tried [other solution] and [what went wrong].
Then someone in [community/group]
mentioned [Product]."
Like, I actually [evidence of transformation].
My [metric/indicator] went from [before]
to [after]."
reviews and [stat]."
Link's below."
Parasocial trust + social proof + authenticity. The UGC format works because it doesn't look like an ad. The viewer's guard drops by the end of second two. Opening with "I was really skeptical" is a pattern interrupt that signals authenticity - skeptics trust other skeptics. The CTA is deliberately low-friction ("just try it") because by this point, the viewer has already self-identified and the sell is done. Don't oversell the close.
Template 3 - The Contrast / Before-After Script
Best for: Transformational products, services, supplements, software
every single [timeframe].
I'd already tried [list of failed solutions].
None of it worked because [root cause explanation]."
that changes everything."
I [specific new behavior].
My [metric] went from [before number]
to [after number] in [timeframe]."
[One-sentence mechanism explanation]."
the link is below."
Transformation story + temporal contrast. The viewer maps themselves onto the "before" state and mentally experiences the "after." Notice the product isn't introduced until 48 seconds in - by then, the viewer has already decided they want the result. The product is just the delivery mechanism for a transformation they've already emotionally committed to. This is the highest-emotion script format and performs best with cold traffic.

Template 4 - The Contrarian / Hot Take Script
Best for: Cutting through saturated markets, building brand awareness
[common advice] only works when [specific condition].
For [specific customer], doing [common advice]
actually [negative consequence]. Here's why:"
Instead of [old approach], [new approach].
The difference: [specific result comparison]."
Which is why our [metric/proof point]
is [impressive result]."
Pattern interrupt + authority. The viewer is already tired of hearing the same advice. Opening with "stop" or "everyone's wrong about X" creates a cognitive jolt that demands attention - the brain has to reconcile what it just heard against what it believed. The key is that the contrarian claim must be substantiated. A hot take without receipts just reads as arrogant. A hot take with a tight logical explanation builds instant authority.
Template 5 - The Stats / Data Lead Script
Best for: B2B, SaaS, high-consideration products
[do thing that's costing them].
Here's what the [X]% who figured it out
are doing differently."
The finding: [specific insight].
The implication for you: [practical consequence].
If you're [specific behavior],
you're in the [losing percentage]."
[specific different thing].
The tool they're using: [Product].
It [mechanism of action] which means [direct benefit]."
Authority + social proof + FOMO. The stat creates instant credibility - the brain treats numbers as fact. The "X% winning vs. Y% losing" creates group identification anxiety. Everyone wants to be in the winning group, and nobody wants to be caught doing the thing the losing 73% does. Frame the data to make inaction feel like a choice they're actively making against their own interests.
Template 6 - The Founder Confession Script
Best for: Service businesses, agencies, personal brands
owners would never admit."
we [embarrassing truth about early approach].
We thought [wrong belief].
It cost us [specific consequence]."
[key insight].
Once we understood this, everything changed.
We [specific action change],
which led to [specific result]."
around this insight. For our customers,
that means [direct benefit].
No [old frustration]. Just [desired outcome]."
[specific situation] -
[low-friction CTA].
We'll show you [specific promise]."
Authenticity + reciprocity + authority. The confession format disarms ad resistance immediately - it signals that the speaker is not posturing. The viewer feels like they're getting insider information that isn't available elsewhere. The confession also functions as a mirror: the viewer sees their own current situation in your "before" state. By the time you pitch, you've already established yourself as someone who has solved the exact problem they're sitting in right now.
Template 7 - The "Problem First" Direct Response Script
Best for: Any product in a competitive market with clear pain points
who [does specific thing],
this is directly for you."
[specific amount/consequence] every [time period].
You know it. You've been dealing with it for [timeframe].
And the solutions out there -
[common solutions] -
they work until they don't."
is happening for people who figured out [key insight].
The gap between you and them isn't budget,
isn't experience. It's [specific variable]."
In [timeframe], you get [specific result].
No [objection 1]. No [objection 2]."
[Price/offer/urgency]."
Direct callout + loss aversion + competitive envy. The callout in the hook instantly qualifies - anyone who doesn't fit the profile self-selects out, which means the 10% who do are maximally engaged. "You know it. You've been dealing with it" is a deliberate validation move that builds trust by proving you understand the viewer's inner monologue. The competitive agitate section triggers FOMO by making inaction feel like watching others win.
Template 8 - The Educational "Tip" Script
Best for: Building brand trust, retargeting campaigns, content seeding
here's one thing you're probably getting wrong."
The data says [correct insight].
Specifically: [specific finding].
The reason this matters:
[direct implication for their results]."
When you do this, [specific expected outcome].
We've seen this work with [proof context]."
[Product/Service] handles [specific task]
so you can focus on [more important thing].
[Brief social proof]."
Reciprocity + authority. Giving a genuine tip first triggers the psychological obligation to return value. The soft pitch at the end feels earned, not pushed - the viewer has already received something useful from you, so the brand is associated with competence before the ask ever arrives. This is the single best format for retargeting warm audiences who've seen your harder sells. They don't realize it's an ad until they've already watched it.
How to Brief an Editor Using These Templates
Once you have a script, the next bottleneck is production. The script you just filled in is only valuable if it comes back from editing the way it was written. Most scripts get gutted in post because the brief was vague. Here's how to fix that.
- Send the script with timestamps. Label every section: [0-3s hook], [3-25s body], [25-45s solution]. Your editor should never have to guess what the most important second in the video is. The hook section should be visually distinct - different pacing, different energy from the rest.
- Include 3 visual references per section - not for copying, for tone calibration. An editor who doesn't know if your product is luxury or scrappy will default to their own taste. Reference videos communicate taste without a call.
- Specify aspect ratio, length, and platform before anything else. A 9:16 TikTok cut is a completely different edit from a 1:1 Meta feed video. Your editor should know the destination before they touch the timeline.
- Request a "hook-only" cut first - 5 seconds - before committing to the full edit. If the hook doesn't work, the full video doesn't work. Getting a 5-second test cut is fast and tells you everything you need to know before the editor spends 4 hours on a video that won't convert.
- Always brief for 2 hook variations on the same body. Run Hook A and Hook B against the same body edit. You get double the test surface for no extra production cost. This is the fastest way to optimize a creative without starting from scratch.
At AdsBabe, this brief goes to our team and you get back a video in 72 hours at $50. Our editors are trained in direct response - you don't need to explain what a hook is, why pacing matters, or why the first 3 seconds are more important than the other 57 combined. They already know. We built our process around the PAS framework, the same one you just read.
Fill in your template. Brief us. Film it or send us footage. Get your ad back in 72 hours.

What media buyers are saying
Template 4 is so underrated. I've been using the 'everyone's wrong about X' hook for TikTok and my hook rate doubled. The key insight I got from this was that the contrarian take has to be substantiated - before I read this I was just being edgy without the logic and it tanked. The structure makes it actually land.
The contrast script (Template 3) is my go-to for cold traffic now. The before/after structure works every single time - but the thing that changed it for me was reading that the product doesn't get introduced until 48 seconds in. I was pitching way too early on cold audiences. Restructured it and CPA dropped immediately.
I just filled in Template 7 for my product in 8 minutes. That's insane how simple it was when you have the structure. The callout hook qualified exactly the right person - I wasn't trying to write for everyone, just for the one specific customer. Sent it to my editor with the timestamps. Got the video back in 3 days. Testing it this week.
The educational tip script (Template 8) has been my best retargeting creative by far. People don't realize it's an ad until they've already watched it - they think they're getting free advice, which they technically are. The soft pitch at the end feels natural because the value came first. CTR on warm audiences with this format is nearly double what the hard-sell scripts do on the same audience.
